well i want to thank you gentlemen for turning me in the correct direction.
i found the HOWTO and following it, i had to reconfigure my modem IN WIN98
and linux in order to stop an irq conflict that i had sharing irq 3 with
coms 2 and 4.
my modem WAS on com4 irq3 and now on com 4 irq 7 with no conflicts in win98
and working properly.
after booting linux and "setserial" commands were added, all is now working
well WITH THE MODEM :-)
BUT...
with the line....
in inittab
s1:456:respaw:/sbin/getty ttyS1 DT9600 vt100
according to the serial how too that is how i should start.
now here is an interesting problem.
the getty does not show in the list if i do a ps ax
and of course the terminal attached seems not to work.
BUT...
if i issue a shutdown......
and after i see...
sending all processes the TERM signal....
THEN i see the message....getty starting, and THEN the login prompt
appears in all its glory on the attached term.
what a nitemare.
after hours of this i just cant seem to get a grip on it.
am i missing a link, or process thats getting killed and releasing the
resource when its killed?
or am i just plain missing something?
thanks....
your help was much appreciated....
