Soon after I sent in my question, I tried rebooted my system which had
been up about 8 days. When it came back up, fsck reported problems and I
tried recovery manually with no luck. Since there wasn't anything
important on the system I decided to do a complete reinstall of RH5.1
and this time selected PS/2 mouse with 3 button emulation. This time
the mouse worked. Not only did it work but the middle button worked as
well although I had selected 3-button emulation.
The only thing I can think of having done differently for this
installation was that I selected the option to install all packages
whereas on previous installations I had gone through and manually
checked off all packages except:
innd
pnserver
postgresl
routed
ruserid
rwhod
