Here is a message I sent to someone else...
--------
No, this is not a function of WindowMaker itself...
There are two programs which allow you to do this and a third "cheat"...
1) Root Tail: Root tail will dump /var/log/xxxx messages to the root window.
While it works well I find that it is a bit of a resource hog, since it is
constantly monitoring and updating the state of the root window. Also it
frequently gets "overwritten" by newly opened applications...
2) Eterm: Eterm using the Imlib libraries allows you to set the root window
using Esetroot.
Your existing themes will not work unless you convert the pixmaps to XPM
format then use Esetroot to place the .XPM's onto the root window. After
doing this you may use the transparancy option in ETerm. (you also need the
XPM libs installed)
You can see "thru" your Eterm windows... By modifying the resource file
Eterm's boarders, menus and scrollbars can all be made to disappear. You
need to also move the window position with the geometry command since it
becomes static...
Eterm works rather well, and is much quicker than root tail. I frequently
use it to display "ntop" results "on" my root window.
The disadvantage to Eterm is that on occassion Windows may be placed "under"
the Eterm window.. You need to define a keysequence to "move" the affected
windows to the forfront...
3) Rxvt: This program in the latest interations may be recompiled to enable
pixmap backgrounds. Sometimes people "cheat" by placing a background
similiar to the root window into the rxvt background....
