There's a group of pages on my web site which show screenshots and
the .xinitrc and other configuration files for xfce2.  I use this WM
and do rxvt with transparency (as you can see on the screenshots).
This is not truly transparency but it duplicates the background of
the root window in the rxvt so that it appears to be transparent.
Regardless of what WM you use the rxvt command string I use will work
for you.

The distro version of rxvt won't do this properly so you'll have to
upgrade.  I use rxvt version rxvt-2.21-1.
