My thanks for the several responses to my cry for help. Below I have
included my original post. Here is the follow-up and clarification:
First, there was a question raised as to whether Ontrack worked to
make more than 8GB visible (in Win95). Yes it did work. The drive
correctly reported that it was a 10GB drive. (Of course IBM's GB is
10**9, not 2**30.)
Second, I decided to reinstall LILO. That got me back to square one.
The new drive was no longer accessible to win95. From an msdos
prompt, I Used fdisk and format to get use of the drive again. It now
works as an ~8GB drive. Ontrack is not being used. And LILO works.
As far as a _fix_ for the problem, I gather from posts that I have
seen that it would require a BIOS upgrade. I have the most recent
BIOS release that Dell maintains for this machine, "A06". Should I go
to, say, Intel for a more recent BIOS upgrade? Can this whole 8GB
limitation be addressed that way?
My only problem now (other than having paid for more disk than I am
using and also being somewhat disgruntled with IBM's claim that
Ontrack would "fix" the 8GB problem for older machines) is that
Windows still views the new drive as an Iomega removable, presumably
because this drive letter was previously held by a Zip drive. (I
realize that this is not a Linux problem, but one fellow offered some
help and asked for details.) The real zip drive continues to work in
its new position, drive E:. The new IBM drive, drive D:, shows an
Icon that claims to be an Iomega removable, but otherwise seems to
work fine. I tried one installation onto this drive and got a message
warning that I was installing onto a removable, but otherwise no
problem. It was suggested that I looke in autoexec.bat and config.sys
for hardcoded references to drive D:. Only mention of the drive
letter was ina REM'd line in config.sys. Despite it being REM'd, I
changed the letter to E, without any effect after rebooting. So I am
still looking for that fix.
A related problem is that I can't install much Windows stuff on the
new drive as my "registry" is apparently full. Will have to learn
more about that and post to an appropriate news group.
