Thanks much Thomas (and to all others that replied). Your theory was right
on target.
The cron task should start an ordinary shell script (i.e. NOT an expect
script). This the shell script calls the expect shell script.
Errors all gone. Works fine !

I'd suggest you put your expect script in a separate file and write an
"ordinary" shell script which calls expect with the expect script file as
parameter (I have never used expect, so I can't help you with the syntax
there). In theory that should work.
