In response to this posting the Maxima program (a mathematica type of
program) was mentioned. So was Octave (a computational type of program,
like MATLAB). As I'm sure all of you know, for computations a high level
language interpretive type of program, like MATLAB (I'm not familiar
with Octave) is best, and a Mathematica type of program, which does
symbolic manipulation to solve equations, is much less convenient in
general for computations.

The reason for this posting is to mention, and to recommend, the program
called Rlab, a high level language interpretive GPL program with source
code, written by Ian Searle for Linux, but also hosted on other OS's,
including Win32, Solaris. Maybe MAC? I'm not sure. It has a bunch of
technical features, a good scripting language much like C, and good
plotting capability. I've use a *lot*.

One problem I used it for is to solve the dynamical equations of a
spinning soccer style football field goal kick, to see exactly how the
double spin works to curve it to the left (for a right footed kicker).
That problem was a real kick to solve, took only a little while with the
high level language tool.

Overall, Rlab has been better than MATLAB for my purposes, and I
couldn't afford MATLAB with full capabilities anyway.
