As other's have already mentioned, one nice thing with the Celeron is
that it is highly overclockable - the original cache-less Celeron 266
can typically be overclocked to 450MHz, and can be found for under $90
most places. The Celeron 300A, with 128KB on-die cache, can be
overclocked to 400-450MHz as well, and costs about $180 US.

An overclocked Celeron 300A at 450MHz outperforms a Pentium-II 450 for
most tasks...
That said..... the Celeron does not support SMP - as shipped by Intel.
It seems that Intel did a trick like they did with the old 486SX (which
started off as a 486DX with the math coprocessor disabled). The Celeron
and Celeron "A" have a pin or two that are required to support SMP
hardwired in a way such that SMP is disabled. The following link to the
"Dual Celeron Project" shows step-by-step instructions for modifying a
Celeron to support SMP operation. A friend here in town did this with
to Celeron 300A's, and was reliably able to run them in a Dual PII
motherboard (BX chipset) at 400MHz. 450MHz worked okay for one at a
time, but he couldn't get above 400 with both in there.... The setup
was tested using Redhat 5.1 of course! :-)

Unfortunately for now, *I* need Win95 (I don't like NT!). And I *think*
I have an IQ well above 95! :-) I am forced to use it to get my work
done, as more people are willing to pay me to write custom Win32
software, than they are to pay me to write Linux applications. Wish the
reverse were true.... or that Wine or WABI would let me write Win32
apps and use Win32 development tools. I have made some money doing
Linux-related work... but it was peanuts really....
Plus - try finding software for your preschool children to run under
Linux! :-)
