Alternatively, so other users can make their own choices, just make
~/.xsession a symlink to ~/.xinitrc, or edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession, and
change
startup=HOME/.xsession
to
startup=HOME/.xinitrc
Asking Red Hat, again, to make the default xdm arrangement and the default
X startup for runlevel 3 cooperate. Geez. Such a simple thing if you
know what's exactly going on, but such a chore for anybody that wants to
switch to xdm and isn't schooled. One of many little things that Red Hat
ignores every time they do a new release.
Ideally, Red Hat would include an X startup file in /etc/skel (the etcskel
package), with links making ~/.Xclients, ~/.xinitrc, and ~/.xsession the
same file. If you change one, you change them all, everybody has their
Very Own thing to work with in ~ w/r/t starting X, and the various X startup
methods folks come across will cooperate. Anybody tell me the drawbacks
I've ignored. Besides the annoyance of having an X startup file gobbling
up several hundred bytes (!) even for people who don't run X. By default.
