Setting up xdm/kdm

I have been trying to discover how to setup xdm (so that
I can then use kdm) but am lost. I simply don't get the
man page...they are all cryptic or seem to assume more
knowledge to start with than I presently have. I have
also failed to find any HOWTO or mini-howto on exactly
what it takes to setup xdm.
I have RH 5.1, kernel 2.0.35 installed and the following
window managers:
kdm (my present primary wm)
Enlightenment (which I would like to play with a lot
more-I like it)
Icewm (haven't tried it yet)
Window Maker (haven't tried it yet)
fvwm2/AnotherLevel
Right now, I only have Enlightenment running when I
login as root or startx as su. I would like to setup
kdm (and need to get there by first getting xdm running)
so I can login and select whichever wm I want to play with.
I do not have any .xsessions, nor any other file EXCEPT
xinitrc which has the original fvwm2, fvwm, etc, entries
commented out and replaced with the simple "startkde".
What do I need to do to get xdm setup and THEN kdm? I
have even been reading in my _RedHat Linux Unleashed_ but
it only has a couple short paragraphs about xdm...and it
certainly isn't enough.
I searched the Linux Documentation Project page for anything
regarding xdm...nothing. Not. A. Thing.
Please help me out here.
