I can't make my CD drive work

Hi everyone.
I have a serious problem with my CD drive (Toshiba 8x IDE ATAPI) on my 486
DX4 -120Mhz AMD computer with 16MB RAM. Perhaps someone around here
encountered such a problem and can help me.
I installed RedHat 5.1 and, asuming everything was OK, I recompiled the
kernel, merely to get out the ISDN, PCMCIA and few other drivers I didn't
need. I started optimizing things around though, I admit. After that,
EVERYTHING worked smoothly but the mounting thing. I share Linux with Win95
(vfat) on the same HDD (IDE). Now look at the symptomes:
1. When I try to mount any vfat partition or the CDROM from the Control
Panel (X environment), the system freezes completely without any error
message - painfully reminding me of Win95.
2. I can succesfully mount the vfat partitions from the X Environment
console - xterm or something. The system freezes when I try to mount the
CDROM without any error message.
3. From the "real console" (outside the X environment) I can succesfully
mount the vfat partitions, but when I try to mount the CDROM I get the
message "ISO9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1" and the system is
dead.
4. Guess what? I rebooted the system with my old kernel (the one resulted
from the installation), and the vfat partitions can be mounted from both the
console or from the X environment, but when I try to mount the CDROM from
the console I get the message "hdb: media changed" and everything is frozen
(everything means everything, including any other virtual consoles or
anything you might think of).
Note: The CDROM is indeed secondary master in my computer.
PS. Perhaps this problem is somehow commonly encountered by you, but, as you
might have guessed, I'm just beginning to fit into Linux World, though I'm
quite well familiar with computers and other (guess which) OS's.
Please help.
