What have I missed, or misunderstood?

Man lpr says this with respect to the -p option.

  -p      Use pr(1) to format the files (equivalent to print).

To me this means that "lpr -p filename RETURN"

should have the same effect as

"pr filename|lpr RETURN".  

But it doesn't work that way.  "lpr -p filename RETURN" produces no
printer output at all.  Can anybody straighten me out on this?
