This is set by the kernel itself, and depends upon which system the =
kernel was compiled for...
You'll have to recompile the kernel and install it with the Pentium (or =
whatever) option set in the configuration.
I would NOT recommend doing this unless you are already somewhat =
familiar with compiling programs, the Make command, Lilo, the boot =
process, how modules are used, etc.

I have installed redhat 5.0 hurricane 2.0.32 i586 for a scientific =
application which requires csh as shell and a line 'setenv HOSTTYPE =
i486-linux' in the .cshrc file.
When I do an echo $HOSTTYPE after login, I get an i386-linux =
instead.
The setenv produces a list with both HOSTTYPE and MACHTYPE =
indicating i386.
Where is this i386-linux stored and can I force it to become =
i486-linux.
