Have you read the PPP-HOWTO? It mostly talks about the client side, but the
server stuff is covered near the end.

This is pretty straightforward. The exact procedure depends on the OS
running on the 386/486 machines. For Win95/NT, see messages in the thread
"Re: Xwindows under Win98/95/NT". For Linux the procedure is similar except
that you'll also have to allow the connection by issuing the 'xhost'
command on the user's machine.
An advantage to using Linux on the small machines (other than stability) is
that you can set them up as Xterminals that always display a graphical
logon via xdm running on the server. This is a little more complex to setup
than launching an X app on command. I have read about this, but have not
had to actually do it.
There is Xserver software that will let you use Win95/NT machines to
display X apps that are running on a central server. XwinPro
<http://www.labf.com/> is a good value at US$99 for license. There are
volume discounts. If you need freeware, the MI/X server from MicroImages
<http://www.microimages.com/> will do in a pinch. You'll probably want to
add some fonts though.
