Thanks for the advice everyone...I found out what the problem was.  Just for
laughs I decided I'd use Disk Druid to partition my disk, since I'd never
used it before; however, it never made an active partition, so I had to use
fdisk and flag one manually.  The wierd thing is, I've used Linux fdisk a
number of times on brand new hard drives without having to explicitly flag
my active partition, and LILO comes up just fine.  Is Disk Druid just poorly
designed (moot point), or did I just miss an option when I used it? 
Regardless, I think I'll stick with fdisk.
