I don't think any of the open source progs for Linux have enough muscle to be said to be "approachintg the abilities of Mathematica", but there are a number of variations on the MatLab theme (one of which has a Mac-like interface: SciLab), and Pari can do some potent number-theoretic computations. Euler also has a GUI, but has less available modules and functionality than the MatLab clones.
Actually, this might be one area for GTK/Qt collaborators to consider. I know that since I graduated with my BS.CS, I've been working on an insurance system, and my brain is growing quite soft and flabby.... ;-)
