We have seen this problem intermittently as well. We are running RH5.0 and
we have seen this happen with kernel 2.0.32 and 2.0.35, so my guess is that
it is not a kernel problem. I have posted this exact problem here before,
and never got any responses. Usually a reboot fixes it temporarily, but it
eventually comes back. ps -aux works fine, and we have not seen this error
with any other program. We know (at least from the output of the "free"
command) that there is plenty of memory available on the system. Thoughts????
