Certain versions of Netscape have a *serious* memory leak. When you are
using Netscape, you may wish to run "top" in an xwin and periodically check
your swap usage. If your swap use starts going through the roof (Listen
for your hard disk to chatter periodically when you don't otherwise expect
any activity), exit Netscape and see if it clears up.
I'm using the RPM 4.06-2 of Netscape Communicator (and common), and haven't
observed this problem yet ... although I've also stopped visiting the page
that elicited such behavior. The page that seemed to reliably cause
Netscape to eat memory was a sort-of-email-list like page with everything
local to the page. Reading and editing the messages inside Netscape (not
Netscape Mail, but in a form inside Communicator) seemed to especially
elicit the memory leak.
Look for a syslog message in /var/log/messages complaining "can't load
interpreter." If you see one about the time of your hang, then running out
of swap space is definitely what happened. When you run out of swap, the
machine usage pegs at 100% as the machine desperately tries to find memory.
It will never succeed, of course.
