Question on shutdown

Ok....I _know_ that it is essential to do a shutdown....and I know you should never turn off your machine without shutting down first. Well....today I was using netscape in X and all of a sudden the machine locked up, and the CPU monitor showed 100% cpu usage. I let it sit for about 10 mins...and it stayed locked up. I tried everything that I could including a ctrl-alt-del, and telneting into the box to shutdown. The machine would not let me do either. I eventually had to turn the machine off....and ended up royally screwing my file system. Is there anything else I could have done, so that if this ever happens again, I can solve the problem. I am running Gnome, and I understand that it is still under development, so I am thinking that that may be the reason it locked up, but I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Oh....by the way I am running 5.1 on a P200 w/MMX. Thanks,
