There are a couple of alternatives.
1. www.edgemail.com: They have a great program which we use and it supports
SMTP and POP3 so your users can use a third party email client to retrieve
their as well as thru the web. It's a little pricey though however, it's
written in C and runs much faster than HTML alternatives.
2. www.mintersoft.com: Haven't used theirs but I've heard that its very
customizable. Also a little pricey.
3. www.endymion.com/products/mailman: Uses HTML and CGI and I believe that
it's free. I've played around with this and it's great for smaller
organizations without too many users and very customizable if you know HTML
and CGI.
