kernel upgrading

I am looking to upgrade my linux kernel from RedHat 3.0.3 linux 1.2.13 to
linux 2.0.18-6 that I download as an .rpm from the RedHat site. I will be
using RPM from an NFS mounted drive. I am assuming RPM is capable of this
particular kernel upgrade.
I need the full ELF capability and memory management implementation of linux
2.0 for a particular piece of commercial software I run.
The hardware is a DELL Latitude XP (486DX4-100) portable with PCMCIA
modem and ethernet card (3COM).
My default PERL is V4.036.
Which should I use
rpm -Uvh kernel-2.0.18-6.i386.rpm
OR
rpm -Uvh kernel-source-2.0.18-6.i386.rpm ?
Should I preserve any kernel configuration files before running rpm?
Will I have to rebuild the kernel after the rpm operation?
