Resolver Broken?

I have 3 searches in my resolv.conf but it the resolver seems to take no
notice of them. It will only allow me to use short names for my domain,
otherwise I have to use FQDN.
I have 3 machines linked by ppp:
Machine 1:
Domain: winona.radnet
IP Net: 10.10.0.0
Machine 2:
Domain: dax.radnet
IP Net: 10.20.0.0
Machine 3:
Domain: parham.radnet
IP Net: 10.30.0.0
Each machine is running named and is a primary server for its
subnet/subdomain and a secondary server for the other 2. All the cache files
are being created OK but, for example, adding the line
"search winona.radnet dax.radnet parham.radnet"
to machine 1 in my resolv.conf doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference
as I have specify FQDN for all but names in the winona.radnet domain.
Any ideas what is going wrong?
BTW: If anyone needs to see config files for named let me know.
