RH 4 Installation hangs at "Install bootloader"

This is my first message to this list. I hope the form and substance is okay
for the purpose. It looks like it's going to be a while before Red Hat can
get back to me on this problem. I'll try to keep this brief and to the point.
I've encountered two problems in subsequent attempts to install Red Hat/Intel:
Linux' fdisk would only allow me to create a swap partition, and one large
primary Linux partition; and, as the subject suggests, "An error occured during
step 'Install bootloader' of the install."
I have System Commander as my primary boot manager, with Windows 95, inhabiting
one primary partition and an extended partition. Previously, I had Slackware 95
running in another primary partition. As far as booting Slackware, everything
worked very well.
System hardware background: Cyrix P120+, SuperMicro P55T2S Motherboard, 32mb
RAM, 256kb pb cache, AMI BIOS, Hitachi 4X IDE/ATAPI cdrom, 2.1GB Seagate
Fast ATA-2 hard drive, Teac floppy, etc.
The first problem, with fdisk, may be of my creation, or misuse of fdisk:
The User's Guide suggests six partitions, including swap, root, user, source,
home, and a /usr/local partition for non-RPM software.
- -> If I have one large chunk of hard drive real estate sandwiched between
two other primary partitions(I have a total of 3 primary and 1 extended partit-
ion.), how do I break that large partition into multiple Linux partitions?
The second problem--the error at LILO installation--seems a bit more complex.
I'm doing a "normal" installation, from the cdrom, and with the boot disk
supplied.
It doesn't matter whether I try to install LILO to the MBR (2nd choice) or
to the
root partition. In both cases, I attempted retries to no avail. Of course,
I wasn't able to create a separate root partition to install LILO to.
--> Is this a bug, or am I doing something very wrong?
--> Is there a fix? and/or What is the correct procedure?
--> Are these two problems interrelated?
From virtual console #4 I found this output on the last line:
"<4>hdc: cdrom_decode_status:error=0x34"
Sorry that I don't have anything more in the way of error messages from Linux.
I hope that my lack of technical jargon (and knowledge) about Linux is made up
for with sufficient clarity of language. If the reader can assist me in any
way,
