The best place to ask is probably news.software.nntp. They have the real
news admins. The only thing I've seen said repeatedly is that several disks
are better than one, and if possible spread over more than one controller.
I/O is the real bottleneck, so fast cards and controllers are important, buti
if you have a big feed memory is a factor, probably depending more on the
number of clients which will spawn nnprd.
