To answer the question...no FQDNs require a terminating period in the
named data files - if they are not terminated the domain is appended
to them - which would be wrong for what is already a FQDN (this is a
favourite mistake we have all made!). Dotted Quads do not need this as
they are intrinsically 'absloute' addresses - no domain is ever
appended to them (almost the truth - but remember the IN-ADDR.ARPA
which is appended in the reverse look up file - but that is done
*explicitly*).
