I have another history. I had a modem which worked on Linux and in DOS.
IRQ 5. I bought a soundcard and installed Win95. No PnP cards.
They both could work on Linux but in DOS/win95 the modem could not work
anymore. I tried a lot of hardware configurations on Win95, tried a lot of
IRQs until that win95 hanged after a restart. Even the safe (??) mode
hanged. The unique solution was a complete reinstall of win95. Also, I had to
choose an IRQ that should be used by some COM (and I had to disable this COM)
in such a way DOS/win95 could recognize my modem.
