Configuring a gateway sl0+eth0 with RH

Hi all,
I am moving ( or attempting to move ) from Slackware 3.0 to RH 3.0.3
and thence to 4.0.
I have a machine ( 486/33 16M ) configured as an Internet gateway
using Slackware 3.0 ( kernel 1.2.13 ). I have a 56K framerelay
line coming in to a serial interface set at hi speed and I have an
ethernet card ( SMC Ultra ) connecting to my LAN.
I set up my slip interface using setserial(spd_hi)+slattach+ifconfig
+route in rc.inet1 ( in Slackware 3.0 ).
I have a separate 2 gig IDE drive at hda for my RH install.
My Slackware installation is on sda and sdb.
I switch between the two using separate boot floppies.
I have no DOS on this machine.
When I install RH 3.0.3 on hda where should I put the
slattach stuff and what should I answer during install for
configuration - is this a dialup + ethernet ? ( although I don't have
a dialup, answering yes somehow seems to enable the sl0 device -
is this true ? ).
i am attempting to edit the files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
by hand as this seems to be the only way to do this.
The order of initializing the interfaces is important -
first lo0 then sl0 and last eth0 - but the order in
the init process ( /etc/rc.d/rc.init/network ) has this backward.
I tried putting my stuff in rc.local but this gets done last
and the routes are all screwed up.
I am on my third or so attempt at upgrading to a 4.0.
The RH 4.0 installation seems to delete slattach - what is the
substitute for slattach - I need SLIP ( not PPP not CSLIP ) and
I can't change that.
Also, on fresh RH 4.0 installs the installation goes fine until
the last step where the bootloader is installed - this always
fails no matter what I select ( MBR, root partn or floppy ).
I have seen this probem mentioned many times on the C.o.l.* newsgroups.
But I haven't heard of a solution any suggestions ?
