Wisdom needed... /home/users groups...

The default behavior of useradd, or adduser (whatever) has been to
add users PLUS add a group for each user.
This goes against my grain (headache) and I've been "fixing" it
through various means so that I do something like:
chown (user):(regular_users_group) (user)
On the home directories, and fix the /etc/group so it isn't cluttered.
I know there's lots of ways to do this, but as much as I've done
Unix/Linux, I've never had to admin lots of users.
Any pointers ? Advice ? Wisdom type stuff ? Watch out for... ?
