I previously posted a query about sendmail pausing for a minute when starting up. I received several suggestions on how to cure that and spent several hours trying the suggestions with no success. Thanks everyone who tried to help.

However, I did something which "appears" to cure my problem. I upgraded from 3.0.3 to 4.0!! I was VERY apprehensive about this move after reading all the problems others have had. Contrary to problems others have had, my upgrade went smooth as silk. When I rebooted, as a bonus, my sendmail no longer pauses, I get syslogd working, and all is right with the world.

I'm still not sure why the upgrade helped, I'm just glad it did. It also apparently installed pam, and some other things that I really don't understand, but that will come with time I'm sure.

The upgrade also broke my sound devices, etc. so I'm going to have to recompile, but I'm not nearly as apprehensive about that as I once was. Thanks group.
