Have you looked at qmail (http://www.qmail.org), a sendmail replacement written
by Dan Bernstein with security and performance in mind? It uses a maildir
format with one message per file in order to aviod the corruptable mbox format.
I don't know how this behaves with multiple mailboxes, but in essence the agent
can do whatever it pleases once qmail has delivered mail to the directory.

Qmail has generated a lot of interest, but AFAIK, there is no IMAP server for
this format. I would love to see one, though. A pop3d is included in the
package, and there is a qmail-0.92.i386.rpm. There are also smtp2mbox, etc
programs to kludge use with existing pine ...
