Big problems in trying to upgrade to 4.0

I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade one of my systems from 3.0.3 to
4.0. I am using a 'non-official RH cdrom bought from Cheapbytes.'
At this point the system is completely unusable.
Things seemed to be going well, but then I started getting messages about
rpm installation failing. It started with the install of kernel modules
and would not then install anything further.
I suspect that the problem is that I had 30 MB in the old root partition
pand now it needs 50 MB. Is that correct?
I tried to repartition the disk, but the 'p' part of fdisk which
attempts to print the partition table gave me so many error messages that
I couldn't decide what to do.
It lists partitions such as /dev/hdb3 having several sectors in the same
place and suggests it is not a linux filesystem
It seems that I will have to delete all of my bad partitions and
re-install.
/sbin/mingetty libc.so.5.3.12 is not an ELF file. u
This is a bit ridiculous. I had a great working 3.0.3 system.
Now, I apparently have to re-install everything. I really wanted to save
the /usr/local partition. I copied most of my config files, /etc/hosts,
/etc/rc.d/rc.local, to it.
Any ideas?
