Ed,
When you connect to your ISP, you're given a dynamic IP address.
The address that you're issued is usually registered by your ISP
within the DNS.
For arguments sake, Your machine's FQDN is "foo.deathstar.org"
When you connect to your ISP "bigisp.net", you are issued a
dynamic IP address in the "dialup.bigisp.net" domain
eg: dial01.dialup.bigisp.net
As long as that session lasts, you are considered to be
dial01.dialup.bigisp.net. As long as your ISP has registered
it's dialup IP addresses within the DNS, you should be OK.
You can try to connect to ftp.uu.net and if they refuse your
connection due to its inability to do a reverse lookup of your
IP address, you should contact your ISP and complain.
If you want a 'FQDN' thats not bogus, you can always register with
the INTERNIC ( and pay $100 for the privilege) or you can register
in the .US domain ( either free or ~$10.00 USD depending on your state
zone etc.)
