You should not need to use ifconfig AT ALL on a ppp link.
It sounds to me like you must have a severely broken script. I suggest
you look on the Red Hat CDROM and install the HOWTO docs. Amongst
those is the PPP-HOWTO. Take a read of that and also look in
/usr/doc/ppp-2.2.0f-2/scripts that has the 'standard' scripts.
Once you have done this, please email me is you need more info/help.
As you are running RH 4, you may also find the (updated) RH PPP-TIP
useful - it's at the URL below.
