Silly question time: What are the permissions on dip? I had the problem
that unless dip is run as root, you will get odd messages including hostname
lookup failure.
You could use sudo, login as root, or setuid dip to root. Personally, and I
know it's dangerous, I set dip suid root.
Oh, if you have any problems with dip not able to create a lock file, check
that each directory to the lock file, like /var/lock, is group writeable,
and maybe set dip groupid.
It's a mess but mine works.
