It should either be on by default or controllable. I have had trouble
turning compression OFF with my DAT drive using the datcompression option
on mt (I'll chase that down one of these days when I get around to it,
not a high priority).

Write the tape on the other system without compression. Not everyone used
the same compression encoding.
