I have not Xcdplay installed, however, as a general rule:
1. look for error messages on the Virtual Console from which you have
started X (via startx), or in a place where messages are stored/displayed
(e.g. for NextLevel-96look&Feel it is a file .FVWM95-errors
in you current directory; for xdm - I don't know)
if nothing enlightening there, try a more drastic measure:
locate Xcdplay executable;
run it through strace;
look into results;
