Many things are possible, depending on the extent of the problem. In a worst
case senario, it is possible to partition and format a new disk and then
restore from tape without doing an initial install. If only the root
partition is damaged it is possible to restore it without doing anything to
other partitions.

Nothing wrong with this, but recently created files may be important to you.
Wouldn't you want to recover them if that option happens to be available?
