Is PAM people's scapegoat or something? :)
PAM has nothing at all to do with it.

I'll wager that the Sun machine, running that old-and-ugly SunOS, is
sending the NFS requests to the portmapper and expecting them to be
forwarded. However, since forwarding requests is a security hole, the
Linux portmapper refuses to do so.
I do have a Solaris 2.5 box that automounts the Linux box's exports just
fine; it's not Linux's fault.
