Hi,
I was running RedHat 3.03 on an Intel 75 Pentium, 24 MB memory, two
32 MB Swap partitions, and a 1.08 GB root partion on /dev/sdb1. I was
using MetroX and an Adaptec 2940 PCI SCSI card.
This weekend, while trying to upgrade to RedHat 4.0, I discovered
that only one of the 2940 drivers would work with my system - the
alt-aic7xxx boot image, which is unsupported. However, since all my
RedHat Machines at work - I have 3 - use Adaptec 1542 SCSI controllers,
I was fortunate enough to be able to swap to an Adaptec 1542 at home
also. I did this for increased compatibility with the RedHat 4.0
installation system, and also because I want to recompile my kernel for
sound card support once I get everything working okay.
The upgrade to 4.0 proceeded fine, but I got an error message that
the lilo install failed. When the upgrade completed, lilo was corrupted
on the master boot record of my /dev/sda win95 disk, so I booted DOS
6.22 on floppy and did an A: fdisk /mbr to restore the DOS mbr. Using a
Linux boot diskette, I can access the RedHat Linux 4.0 system just fine,
and see that it upgraded the control panel, fvwm, etc alright.
But when I try to do a # /sbin/lilo -v on my Linux system, I get
something to the effect of:
0x0880 error on /dev/sda
or something like that. After booting 4.0 from diskette and accessing
my hard drive and root partion, how can I properly install 4.0 Lilo from
the CD and resolve my Lilo /mbr problems? I can't seem to find lilo
listed on the "AVAILABLE" group from the package management control
panel. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Regards, Niel Balsino
