Backup instruction desperately needed, this should be easy so please help!

This should be easy for you veterans...
O.K. I have gotton so far as to get my tape drive installed and recognized
by the kernel. Additionally, I had to rig the ncurses to make it like it is
2.0 so the backup software kbackup and BRU will work (of which they do
now). My problem now is that when I try to backup the server, it writes a
huge file called tape in /dev. My tape drive device is an HP Colorado 1400
tape drive with a fc20 controller card. I have figured out that the tape
device is /dev/fd0H1440. How do I make it actually write to the tape? Is
there some
"ln -s /dev/??? /dev/???" statement I need to use?
