Are you running Colgate? The netcfg control panel does most (maybe not
all) of what you need, although it is rather poorly documented. :( Enter
your domain name (gdi.net, no leading dot) below your host name. The host
name has to be a FQDN. The FQDN should get stashed in /etc/HOSTNAME, and
that should get picked up for most purposes.
There are other things, like /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf that you
probably also don't have set correctly. These can also be tweaked from
the control panel. But the control panels are "emerging technology" that
isn't very well documented yet. So I recommend reading the NET-2/3 HOWTO
and the Network Administrator's Guide, both part of the LDP and likely
already installed on your box. Control panels are GUI candy, not a
substitute for knowing the system IMHO.
I'm not an expert, but I've been where you seem to be. Feel free to
