If you're re-installing the same package that you erased, then rpm -i
--force will indeed work.
Are you sure that rpm -e wouldn't work? It should complain about
files being missing, but still erase any files that are left, and make
a note in its RPM database that you don't have the package installed.
(`should' here means `I believe this is what happens, based on what I
have seen'.)
