Here is my lilo.conf:

When I have the other computer "on" and booted up things work ok and
the card is recognized. When the other computer is off, then I get
this message in the midlle of the startup messages.

NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x340: not found (invalid signature 42 42).
The only other thing that I can think of is that I was able to recompile
support of the card directly into the kernel. My old RedhHat 3.0.3
distribution had gotten crudded up, like yours, I couldn't recompile the
old kernel. When I upgraded to RedHat 4.0 that problem went away.
