were you using the install boot disk? try using the selectable options rather
than auto detect, at least for install it might help. you still will want
to and probably have to reompile your kernel anyhow...

you might have to do it anyhow to get it to run well... I was able to do
an autodetect myself with my ne-2000 clone so I'm not sure.
