sendmail/syslogd and hosts problems

I've got something happening on my system. I've seen this description
before, but can't find it again. When /etc/hosts contains the following line:
127.0.0.1 localhost wr5z
then syslogd doesn't start properly, or at all. If the line simply reads:
127.0.0.1 localhost
then I get the syslogd, complete with logging as intended, but sendmail
takes forever to start up at boot time. Now I'd rather have both quick
bootup and logging, but the logging is more important. How can I configure
my system so I can do this?
I've also tried starting sendmail by hand. If the hosts file reads as in
example two then I get a segmentation fault and a core dump.
I'm running Picasso (3.0.3) on a Cyrix 6x86 P150+. Can someone explain what
is going on here?
