I have it working on a 486/33 ValuePoint with 2 540 meg WD Caviar disks.
The trick was to add
append="hda=1048,16,63 hdb=1048,16,63"
(going from memory here) to the lilo.conf. It seems the Valuepoint bios
must not store disk parameters in the normal way. I also make sure my /
partition falls below the 1024 cyl. limit.
