You did not need to upgrade rpm to upgrade the kernel to 2.0! Please look at:
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/old-releases/redht-3.0.3/i386/2.0-kernel/RPMS
I used the regular rpm binary and used these packages to upgrade to 2.0
kernel..
