With regard to my query on tape close problems, Ray quite properly insisted:

In response to this, I tried a tar of a 250 Mb directory. It worked, and
didn't hang. I checked the tape with "tar tfzv /dev/st0", and it didn't
report any errors. I haven't had to reboot!
Apparently there is some problem with dump and restore with respect to
the Colgate tape drivers.
The only problems were some SCSI disk timeout errors reported via syslog
while the tape operations were in progress. With luck, the disk I/O
was retried. I didn't notice any programs aborting.
Thanks, and I'll be watching for fixes to dump/restore.

P.S. Here is a sample of the errors reported via syslog. My main disk
is scsi ID 0, while the tape is ID 2. Should I be concerned?
