Again, I'm not hip to the 4.0 thing yet, however...
When you copied over the kernel image from the floppy to the hard disk,
did you edit /etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo ?
And then reboot ? And it didn't work ?
In this case, I would explore "kernel parameters" which you can put
into /etc/lilo.conf to tell the kernel to do things like look for
a particular adapter at a particular IRQ and Base IO Address.
