Hello all,

I'm having a problem with dump on my 4.0 system. The problem is that
dump, on only one filesystem, bombs *every* time I try to back that
filesystem up. On the other filesystem, dump works fine.

The error I'm getting is "Master/slave protocol botched". I normally
run dump through amanda, but I can reproduce the problem with the following
command, so I don't think amanda has anything to do with it:

dump -0f /dev/null /dev/sda1

(The same command (well, pointing at a different filesystem) works
flawlessly on the other filesystem on this machine)

Dump worked on this filesystem *once*. And that was the day I installed
4.0 on the system (a fresh install). The next day, I applied all the
applicable upgrades from the errata page. Dump hasn't worked on this
filesystem since.

I've fsck'ed the filesystem, ran badblocks on it, and everything looks ok.
But here's where it gets interesting. A ran into someone else that
described this exact problem on *their* system! About the only thing that
we have in common is that we are running an errata-upgraded 4.0 system, and
have built our own kernels.

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions would be *greatly* appreciated!
This system is to be the DNS for over 1000 systems, and I went out on a
limb recommending Linux for this -- Help keep me employed, and my boss
happy! :-)
